The benefits of infrared sauna

The practise of self care and looking after your overall wellbeing has become more important now than it ever has been, particularly during recent times.

With the new year comes more of a focus on setting health goals whether it be eating well with whole foods, juice detoxes, more physical movement, meditation and mindfulness amongst many things.

Here we take a look at infrared sauna, the benefits of this treatment and how to incorporate it into your regime to support your health goals.

We connected with our friends at Nimbus Co who are well known here in Bondi Beach as well as Byron Bay and Melbourne for the beautiful spaces they've been creating for this self care practise.

This is what you need to know.

What is the difference between a regular sauna or steam room and infrared sauna?
Unlike traditional saunas, which are heated through convection, the air in an infrared sauna is a lot drier making it easier to breathe. Infrared saunas use infrared heating panels that emit mid, near and far light, giving off what is called ‘radiated heat’, penetrating deep within your tissues, muscles and cells.

These deeply therapeutic saunas were developed in the 70’s in Japan and have been continuously refined ever since. At Nimbus, we offer state-of-the-art full spectrum cedar wood saunas from Clearlight Sauna’s Sanctuary range.

What are some of the short term and long term benefits?
People frequent our tranquil spaces in support of chronic to mild health concerns. Infrared saunas are deeply therapeutic and host a range of amazing benefits including detoxification, pain relief, increased circulation, skin rejuvenation and stress support.

How frequently should you go to see results?
It’s a real personal preference on how frequently you should sauna. I personally recommend adding a weekly infrared sauna session into your routine as a way to slow down and give your body & mind some extra support.

If you are working on specific health goals such as detoxification or skin health I would recommend 2-3 times per week for a month period to notice the benefits.

What are some tips/precautions and recommendations pre and post sauna?
Ensure all personal care products including make-up, deodorant and perfumes are removed before your sauna to allow your skin to breathe.

Adequate hydration pre and post sauna session is required. Rehydrate with water (with a pinch or sea salt), fresh coconut water or a natural electrolyte powder.

Use a dry body brush and/or gua sha tool to support detoxification and your lymphatic system.

Showering is a personal preference post-sauna, you will find your body continues to sweat for some time after a session. If you wish to wait, simply wipe any sweat off with your towel and shower once you get home to maximise the detoxification process.

Interesting fact
Traditional saunas only remove around 3% of toxins in your body, whereas an infrared sauna can traditionally remove up to 20%.
